As mentioned above, the lighting requirements of plants in the seedling stage, vegetative growth stage, flowering stage and fruiting stage are different. Through the artificial light source, we can well control the illuminance, even the spectrum. Here are the PPFD requirements of the simplified version of the plant at each growth stage:
1. Tissue culture.
The light needed for tissue culture is about 40-60 μ mol / m ²/ s, and the light needed for tissue culture of most plants is in the range of 40-60 μ mol / m ²/ s.
2. Seedlings (light in the seedling stage of most crops).
The light at the seedling stage is usually 150-250 μ mol / m ²/ s, which varies from crop to crop.
3. Vegetative growth period.
The light of vegetative growth period of leafy vegetables is 250-350 μ mol / m ²/ s, and the average light of most leafy vegetables is 250 μ mol / m ²/ s, but some leafy vegetables, such as fast-growing lettuce, can give higher light to meet the needs of rapid growth.
Vegetative growth of high light plants PPFD:300-600 umol / m ²/ s, such as tomato, cucumber, medicinal plants and other flowering plants.
4. reproductive growth stage, that is, flowering and fruiting stage.
During this period, giving higher light will improve the harvest, by increasing far red and ultraviolet UV light, increasing flowering, taste or active substance content, in the case of 400ppm without adding carbon dioxide content, light 350-600 μ mol / m ²/ s, if you can increase carbon dioxide content to 1200ppm, light up to 600-1200 μ mol / m ²/ s, can significantly increase the yield, specific varieties such as tomatoes, high-light medicinal plants, etc.
5. Ornamental plants such as succulent plants and insectivorous herbivores, PPFD: 250-350 umol / m ²/ s.
PPFD, μ mol/m ²/ s and Lx conversion, there can only be a rough algorithm, and must be white light-based plant lamps, 60-70Lx equal to 1 μ 70Lx / m ²/ s, due to spectral reasons, red and blue light more plant lights, not suitable for this ratio.
